Extra Details

Portumna (the landing place of the oak tree) is one of Galway’s most attractive towns only 7 miles away from the property and is ideally situated by the River Shannon and Lough Derg to available of all the attractions these fine waters have to offer. Portumna Forest Park provides a mile long sign-posted trail that guides you through a marvellous world of common and exotic trees. Of interest in Portumna would be Portumna Castle and Gardens, and the Dominican Friary, which are within the town of Portumna.

It was inevitable that an important town like Ballinasloe should be founded by an ancient ford on the River Suck. Ballinasloe is located 12.5 miles from the property and is steeped in history, and has been lauded for the architectural character of its fine streetscapes. This planned layout of the town in the 19th Century consisting of wide streets, a market square, fair green, show grounds and town hall can be attributed to William Trench, who was conferred with the Earldom of Clancarty at this time. The town can trace its roots back even further with the existence of three ring forts in the town and two possible Crannog sites dating back to the 1st century. Three Medieval Tower Houses are located within the Urban District as does a well preserved Early medieval parish Church at Templepoilin Pollboy, built in about the 9th Century by the Augustinian Monks of Clontuskert. Today, Ballinasloe is a prosperous and expanding town on the main Galway/Dublin route and is the main commercial/industrial centre for east Galway. It is also the main angling centre on the River Suck, which is renowned for its pike, bream, perch fishing in its more sluggish sections and trout in its tributaries. Cruising on the River Suck is also available.

FISHING - Pike and Trout fishing available on the River Shannon by bank or boat.

GOLF - Portuman 18 hole Golf course and also Pitch and Putt courses and shuffleboard. Ballinalsoe, Loughrea and Birr Golf Courses within 20 minutes drive.

WALKING AND CYCLING - Close by cottage and in Portumna Forest Park, on the shores of Lough Derg, taking in Portumna Castle and Monastery.

CLAY SHOOTING - a ten minute drive away from cottage.

BOATING - Self Drive motor cruisers can be rented in Portumna for use on the Shannon.
